Idaho Public Television, a statewide public television system and Public Broadcasting System affiliate, has incorporated a new SeaChange Universal MediaLibrary (UML) near-line archive to support its play-to-air SeaChange Broadcast MediaLibrary (BML). The SeaChange UML provides a robust 72TB of raw capacity in a compact 5 rack units high storage matrix. Each UML is equipped with two 10GigE ports, delivering gigabyte-level performance. It supports studio and post-production workflows including non-linear editing systems like Apple Final Cut Pro and Avid Media Composer. Content is protected with high availability controllers and RAID 6-configured drives that are hot-swappable and field replaceable – ensuring no single point of failure. The UML is readily scalable in a grid architecture.
By integrating the UML with its existing BMLex playout server, Idaho Public Television does not need to re-encode content from videotape. The UML allows file transfer between the two storage environments using the SeaChange MediaGateway software or Harris’s Global Media Transfer system.
“Our play-to-air system expansion is a response to the demand for more content,” said Rich Van Genderen, Director of Engineering, Idaho Public Television. “Our library of file-based video content is expanding, and operationally, we must always be a step ahead to make sure that service to our customers is seamless. We believe that SeaChange keeps abreast with broadcasters’ requirements, and that is why we continue to trust their solutions.”
“SeaChange broadcast solutions promote a truly file-based workflow, which is a must in the competitive broadcast environment,” said Stephane Jauroyou, Vice President for Broadcast Sales, SeaChange International. “With a fully automated, operationally superior broadcast workflow, Idaho Public Television is able to serve its viewers more readily and more comprehensively.”
More than 40 PBS affiliates nationwide are running SeaChange broadcast systems, representing one of the company’s single-largest installed customer bases.
