WVPT, Shenandoah Valley and Central Virginia's public television station since 1968, has transitioned to high-definition broadcasting with SeaChange International, the global leader in broadcast and multi-screen video. The broadcaster moved from SD to HD by adding two SeaChange’s MediaServer (MSV) 1200 servers to function as redundant HD ingest and playout servers complementing its existing SeaChange SD playout environment
The MSV 1200 is the latest in SeaChange’s series of standalone broadcast video servers that offer flexibility in resolution and video formats, making it ideal for channel expansion and adding HD capabilities. At only 3RU, it can accommodate 8TB or 16TB SATA with RAID 6 dual-parity data protection. The MSV 1200 facilitates high channel density ingest (up to four channels) and playout (up to eight channels) of SD, HD and 3D content.
At WVPT, the MSV 1200 will play legacy SeaChange SD files automatically up-converted out of HD playout ports. With the ability to integrate with third-party systems, the MSV 1200 will import files from WVPT’s SeaChange Broadcast MediaCluster (BMC) 6000 SD server via Myers ProTrack broadcast management software. Such flexibility facilitated a quick ramp-up for WVPT to deliver HD content. WVPT first began using SeaChange broadcast solutions in 2002.
“SeaChange provided a seamless transition to HD while allowing maximum return on our investment in existing SD equipment,” said Tony Mancari, Chief Operating Officer, WVPT. “This allowed us to get ahead of the pack in the fast-paced world of public broadcasting.”
“Beyond public broadcasting and local programming, WVPT is one of the most accessible educational institutions in the region,” said Stephane Jauroyou, Vice President of Broadcast Sales, SeaChange International. “SeaChange supports WVPT as it continuously strives to produce excellent educational and cultural content. With the SeaChange MediaServer 1200, WVPT can deliver this programming to the public in razor-sharp HD quality.”
More than 40 PBS affiliates nationwide are running SeaChange broadcast systems, representing one of the company’s single-largest installed customer bases.
The above SeaChange product and others will be demonstrated at the 2011 NAB Show: Booth N4319 at the Las Vegas Convention Center, April 11-14, 2011.
